In any consideration of the great men of western Canada in the 19th hundred years Archbishop Tache must stand high forward the list. A strong promoter of French Catholic colonization of the Canadian West, he exhausted years battling the growing tide of English Protestant immigrants as they multitudeed the West.

When he came west to R River in 1845 Tache was an idealistic young missionary who from the beginning took great interest in the Indians and Metis. In 1854 he became the bishop at St Boniface
